Representative from Decatur county, was born on a farm in Burrell township near Davis City, March 30, 1878. Resided continuously on the farm on which he was born for thirty-six years, until 1915, when he removed to Leon, Iowa, because of educational advantages for his children. Has always been interested in farming, operating his farm either by hired labor or on stock share plan. Was united in marriage to Nelle Mae Jackson November 2, 1898. To this union six children were born, four girls and two sons, one of whom, Marion J., has passed to his reward. In early life taught rural school in connection with farming activities, having received a rural school education and graduating from the Davis City high school, 1898. Has taken active part in community affairs and identified himself with young people's activities. Was boy scout leader six years. Member of the Methodist Episcopal church since early boyhood. Served as township assessor twelve years; secretary of school board, eight years; county auditor of Decatur county, two terms, and county agricultural agent of Decatur county farm bureau, twelve years. Also served as clerk of local draft board during World war. Has been president of Leon board of education since 1928. He is a member of Masonic, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen of America fraternal organizations. Elected to legislature in 1930. A democrat.
