W. H. GISSEL

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the Honorable W. H. Gissel, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

W. H. Gissel was born September 6, 1872, in Buchanan county, Iowa, the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Gissel, and died January 25, 1941, at the age of 69, from injuries received in an automobile accident. In 1893 he was married to Emma J. Bantz and the couple settled on a farm near Independence, later moving to Sumner, Iowa. To this union were born the following children, who survive: Mr. Murray Gissel, Sumner, Iowa; Mrs. Edgar Hood, Independence, Iowa; Mr. Faye Gissel, Independence, Iowa; Private (f.c.) Kenneth Gissell, No. 37189719, Hq. Co. 67, Armored Regiment, A.P.O. 252, United States Army, New York, New York; Mr. Leslie Gissel, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Wallace Stokes, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Homer Miller, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. R. L. Watkins, Anamosa, Iowa; and Miss Vivian Heitland, Toledo, Iowa. Mrs. Emma Bantz Gissel died in 1936. In March, 1938, Mr. Gissel married Mrs. Minnie Nichwoehner, and the couple maintained their home at Sumner for a while and later moved to Hawkeye, Iowa, where they were residing at the time of Mr. Gissel’s death.

Mr. Gissel served his state and community well, and took an active and constructive part in civic and public affairs. Always a loyal Democrat and active in affairs of his party, Mr. Gissel was elected to the Legislature in 1930 and served as a member of the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth General Assemblies and Extra Session of the Forty-fifth. He lived a long, honorable and active life, and will be greatly missed in his community.

Therefore, Be It Resolved, That in the passing of the late Honorable W. H. Gissel the state has lost a valued and honored citizen, and the House would tender, by this resolution, its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow; and

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
