Born on a farm in Harrison Township, Adair County, Iowa, October 4, 1873, the son of David and Charlotte Fleming. M. Fleming was left an orphan at the age of seventeen when his father and mother were taken by death within eighteen days of each other. He was educated in the one room rural school and Iowa State College at Ames. Mr. Fleming was married April 4, 1899, to Clara I. Moyers, of Boone County, Iowa. They had two children; Ethel M. and Albert S. Mr. Fleming always took an active part in community welfare and held various offices of the township. He was appointed township chairman of the World War work, charter member of Adair County Farm Bureau and elected its first secretary. A farmer by profession and a breeder of Poland China hogs, he spent twenty years in corn breeding, being the originator of what is known as Fleming’s Yellow Dent. He lived on a farm in the township where he was born. Mr. Fleming joined the Congregational Church when a young man. He never belonged to any secret organization. He was a Republican in politics, having always taken active part in political affairs. Mr. Fleming was elected November 6, 1928, as a member of the Forty-third General Assembly from Adair County.
