JAMES D. FLEMING

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable James D. Fleming, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

James D. Fleming was born September 26, 1884, of Scotch parentage. His entire life was spent in Stockholm township, Crawford County, Iowa, where he owned and operated a two hundred acre farm. He received his early education in the rural schools, attended and graduated from the Denison Normal College in 1907. He taught school for three years and was actively engaged in farming since then.

In August, 1913, he was married to Lillie I. Carlson and to this union were born two daughters and one son, Ruth Mae, Charlotte Marie and Paul James. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Denison, Iowa.

Mr. Fleming took active part in matters of public interest in his home community. He was assessor and road superintendent for a number of years; he was a member of the school board; President of the Farmers Elevator at Deloit; first Chairman of the Corn Hog Committee; in AAA from 1934 to 1937; Secretary of Agriculture Conservation Board from 1937 to 1944; County Treasurer from 1948 to 1950; Crawford County Supervisor from 1950 to 1956; President of Crawford County Farm Bureau; and also Treasurer of Crawford County Fair Association. He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives from Crawford county and served in the Forty-first, Forty-second and Forty-second Extra sessions of the General Assembly.

Mr. Fleming passed away on Friday, March 9, 1957, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, and he is survived by his wife and children: Ruth Mae, Charlotte Fleming Missimer and Paul J. Fleming. Also surviving are four grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-eighth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable James D. Fleming, the people of Crawford County and the entire State of Iowa have sustained a great loss, and the House expresses its appreciation of his character and public service and tenders, by this resolution, its sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his family in their sorrow.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
