Born in Gibson County, Indiana, on March 8, 1818, the eldest son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. He married Elizabeth R. Moran (born in Maryland, February 24, 1820) in Canton, Illinois on March 7, 1839, and had 13 children. He was elected to serve in the Iowa House of Representatives 1852-54. He passed away on August 31, 1896 in Fremont, Iowa.
