Born Shariton County, Missouri, November 22, 1818. He removed from Missouri to Iowa in 1853 where he continued to reside for 29 years. He was a member of the Fourth Iowa General Assembly which was held at Iowa City during the winter of 1851 and 52, and was elected state school fund commissioner in 1854. He removed from Iowa to Kansas in 1881. Mr. Means was a devoted Christian all his life. He joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1832. He was licensed to preach in 1832 and continued in active church work until 1901. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1890.
