William G. Haun
Clinton County
Born in 1810 in Kentucky. Mr. Haun was one of Lyons’ early pioneers, coming here when the city was but a mere settlement. In the early 1850’s he located at a place eight miles north of Lyons which was ever afterward known as Hauntown one of the oldest settlements in the county. In 1846, Mr. Haun, destined to become a figure of much local prominence, established a flouring mill. A distillery and store were built at the same time. Due to the establishment of the mill and distillery in 1857, Hauntown was one of the most important business points in this section of the country, and Mr. Haun won quite a reputation as a financier. He later built a steam sawmill at the mouth of Elk River. By 1859 his creditors had dispossessed him of his Hauntown property, and he moved the saw mill and converted it into a distillery. Mr. Haun was elected to represent Clinton County in the Second General Assembly in the lower house. He served two terms from 1850-1854. Mr. Haun moved to Kansas about 1880 and died there in April, 1891.
