George D. Crosthwait
Johnson County
Born on May 4, 1808, in Nelson County, Virginia, he was the son of Shelton and Elizabeth (Thompson) Crosthwait. The Crosthwait family relocated to Rutherford County, Tennessee, in the early 1800s. After receiving a solid education, he attended both the University of Virginia and Transylvania University (Lexington, Kentucky) graduating with his M.D. in 1832. He then returned to Murfreesboro to begin his medical practice and became a member of the Medical Society of Tennessee as early as 1831. On October 11, 1836, he married Eliza F. Burton. He later served in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851. Around 1851, he moved to Iowa City, where, as a Whig, he was elected senator for Johnson County in 1852. In the spring of 1854, Crosthwait traveled to California, where he stayed for about three years. Crosthwait’s wife died in Iowa City on December 22, 1860. He returned to Murfreesboro in 1862 and married Caroline Harding. He continued to practice medicine until his retirement in 1882.
