Representative from Clinton county, born there, educated in the public schools and State University, a graduate M.D. in active practice in Clinton; was a brigade surgeon U.S.V. commanding 2d division, 3d army corps field hospital, war with Spain; a lieutenant colonel on Governor Carroll's staff; a member of the Iowa state board of health and Medical examiners; and elected representative to Thirty-eighth General Assembly. His religion is, "The Golden Rule;" his politics, republican. He is the son of Col. John Henry Smith, senator in the Eleventh and Twelfth General Assemblies. His wife is the youngest daughter of Dr. A. B. Ireland, deceased, senator in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth General Assemblies. He has two children, Mrs. Carlos O. G. Tredway, St. Louis, Missouri, Homer I. Smith, a first lieutenant U.S. air force, World War, now assistant county attorney, Clinton, Iowa.
