Wapello County
One of the representatives from Wapello county, was born on a farm in Ohio, September 1, 1854. He received his education in common schools and college, taught school for ten years and later took up the study of law, was first admitted to the bar by the supreme court of Ohio in December, 1881. In youth he was accustomed to all kinds of labor incident to farm life. In March, 1884, he married Miss Louie M. Roberts, near Indianapolis, Indiana, and immediately moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, they have three living children, J. Earl, Jessie Belle and A. Windsor, all of whom are graduates of the Ottumwa high school. On coming to Ottumwa he opened a law office where he has been engaged in the practice of law ever since; during said time he served the city of Ottumwa as city attorney and mayor twelve years, and as a member of the school board, was also county attorney of Wapello county. He served five years in Co. G. Second regiment, I. N. G., and was a member of the expert rifle team of said company. He has always taken an active part in politics, having served three terms on the republican state central committee, and as chairman and secretary of the republican county central committee. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and has been very active in lodge circles, being a member of the Shrine, all degrees of York Rites Masonry, Elks, Knights of Pythias and M. W. A. A republican in politics.
