Representative from Davis county, was born January 4, 1854, in Pike county, Ohio. His father was of Scotch descent and born in Virginia. His mother was of Scotch-English descent and was born in Ohio. Moved with his parents from Ohio to Davis county in 1856, where they located on a farm near Pulaski where he grew to manhood, alternating farm labor with teaching school. Received his education in the rural school; Troy Academy, Troy, Iowa; National Normal School, Lebanon, Ohio, and the Ohio Wesleyan University. Began teaching when 16 years of age and taught in Iowa, Missouri and Ohio, in rural, village and high schools. Was elected county superintendent of schools in Davis county for three terms and was superintendent of Bloomfield public schools. Married Miss Celina Plank of Pulaski, Iowa in 1881 and to them were born one son and two daughters. Is a member of the Methodist church, a Mason, an Odd Fellow, Modern Woodman of America and Son of the American Revolution. Is a farmer by occupation. A democrat in politics.
