HONORABLE J. H. J. STUTT

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating the life, character and public service of the Honorable J. H. J. Stutt, a former member of the Thirty-fourth General Assembly of Iowa, begs leave to submit the following:

J. H. J. Stutt was born in Wayne township, Jones county, Iowa, May 3, 1867. He was a son of John and Mary (Harms) Stutt, both natives of Germany. His father came to this country in 1861 and served as a soldier in the Civil War. Mr. Stutt was reared in Jones county and attended the common schools. At the age of 22 he began his business career as a farmer. He first bought a farm in Wayne township and later bought a farm in Lovell township. At one time he was the owner of a 480 farm in South Dakota.

Mr. Stutt removed to his Lovell township farm in 1906 which was known as the old Hosford place. At one time be was greatly interested in threshing and owned a modern traction engine which was used as power for the threshing machine. He was also an extensive cattle buyer.

Mr. Stutt was married to Catherine M. Zimmerman of Wayne township in 1889. Eight children were born to this union, four of whom survive: Clarence of Lovell township, Emil and George, living on the home farm, and Alva, of Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Stutt passed away May 1, 1908. On October 19, 1909 Mr. Stutt married Catherine M. Balster, a native of Germany, who survives with his four sons. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Politically Mr. Stutt allied himself with the democratic party but never evidenced a desire to participate in local politics. He was a member of the Lutheran church and when his health permitted attended its services.

Mr. Stutt was elected state representative from Jones county and served during the Thirty-fourth General Assembly of Iowa.

Mr. Stutt was well known as an energetic business man. He served as president of the Jones County Trust and Savings Bank from the time of its organization in January, 1916, until it was absorbed by the Monticello State Bank in January, 1926.

Mr. Stutt suffered a heart attack at his home on February 2, and lapsed into unconsciousness until death ensued on Friday, February 3, 1939.

Funeral services for Mr. Stutt were held Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock at Zion Lutheran Church in Wayne township. The church was filled to capacity by a large group of relatives and friends. The service was in charge of Rev. Henry L. Adix, pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, assisted by Rev. F. H. Kehren, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Forty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Iowa in Regular Session, That in the death of J. H. J. Stutt the people of Jones county and the state of Iowa have sustained a great loss. He was a man of vision and courage, of high ideals, of honor, of trustworthiness and of sterling worth as well as a man whose character was at all times above reproach.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the relatives of the deceased.
