JUSTIN R. BARRY

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Justin R. Barry, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Mr. Barry was born in Linn county, Iowa, January 20, 1873, and passed away July 15, 1951. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. James Nicholas Barry. His father was a native of New York and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. He was educated in the public schools.

Mr. Barry was known for years as a leader in publishing and road improvement circles. At his death he was a publisher of the Cherokee Daily Times and Courier. Prior to 1915, Mr. Barry and his brother published the Walker, Iowa, News in Linn county. He was a member of the Iowa Press Association, Iowa Daily Press Association, the National Editorial Association and National Press Club of Washington, D. C. Always a staunch backer for road improvements, Mr. Barry was president of the U. S. Highway 59 Association, since its founding in 1934.

Mr. Barry was married in May, 1904, to Miss Adelaide L. Haight of Cedar Rapids. To this union was born one son, Jeffrey Robert.

Always active in church affairs, Mr. Barry was a Methodist church member and held a position on the board of trustees.

Mr. Barry was elected Representative from Linn county in 1913, serving in the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Sessions of the General Assembly. He was a Republican in politics.

Mr. Barry was active in civic affairs, having been president of the Chamber of Commerce in Cherokee in 1925-26, and a charter member of the Chamber and a member of the group’s board of directors from 1923 to 1935. During World War I he was chairman of publicity in Cherokee for the Liberty Loan and American Red Cross drives. He was a member of Speculative Lodge A.F. and A.M. 307, Cherokee, and a past master of the Walker Lodge from 1903 to 1905 and 1910 to 1912; also a member of Burning Bush Lodge No. 90, Royal Arch Masons of Cherokee, and Crusade Commandery, No. 39, Knights Templar, Cherokee.

Mr. Barry is survived by his wife, Adelaide; four grandchildren; a brother, Arthur J., and a sister, Mrs. Ella Booth of Davenport. Grandchildren are Mary Joe, Patricia Ann, James and Ricky. His son, Jeffrey Robert, preceded the deceased in death December 22, 1949.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Justin R. Barry, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
