Representative from Wayne county, was born in New Haven, West Virginia, December 28, 1852, of Dutch parentage. Moved with his parents to Wayne county, Iowa, in 1857, where he has since lived. Graduated from Western, now Leander-Clark College, in 1872, after which he taught school for several years. Has since been a farmer and stock raiser. Is also a director of the Citizens State Bank, of Corydon, and president of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Wayne county. Has always been interested in the financial, political, educational and religious affairs of his community. Is married and has seven children, all grown. Has not aspired to political office but has held various township offices; was a member of the school board for twenty-five years. Elected Representative in 1910. A Republican in politics.
