Representative from Iowa county. Born at Clinton, Oneida county, New York, of American parentage. He came with his parents to Iowa county in the spring of 1854 and settled on land entered from the Government. Here he resided until his father enlisted in the army in 1862 in the Thirty-seventh Iowa Infantry, better known as the "Gray Beard Regiment." He attended school during the winter and worked on the farm in the summer. During his father's absence he attended school but little. After the war he moved to Marengo, where he spent several years in the Marengo High School. On January 1, 1876, he was appointed deputy county treasurer, which position he held for eight years. After serving as deputy county auditor for one year he was elected for two successive terms as clerk of the district court. After retiring from this office he organized the North English Savings Bank in May, 1889, and has acted as cashier and manager continuously since that time. He has acted as Mayor of the town for two terms and served for fifteen years as a school director. At present he is quite largely interested in farming and stock raising and is a director of the Corn Belt Meat Producers' Association. Elected Representative in 1906. A Democrat in politics
