Jesse W. Monk
Lyon County
A native of Ontario, born January 19, 1837, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Moyer) Monk, both natives of New York State. He was one of 14 children born to his parents. He began life working in the lumber woods for which he received 50 cents per day. He followed this line of work for five years and later bought land and later began buying land and continued to add to his holdings until he was the owner of 562 acres. He raised horses, cattle and sheep extensively and has met with success. He began life with nothing and has experienced all the hardships and uncertainties incident to pioneer life, and finally reached the goal of success. Mr. Monk was married October 11, 1866, to Anna Argo, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of John Argo who was also a native of Ohio. Mr. Monk was a Democrat and took a prominent part in politics in Iowa in the early days before he came to Missouri. He represented Lyon county in the Twenty-third General Assembly. He is recognized as a progressive and public spirited citizen and always stands ready to cooperate with any movement which has for its object the betterment of the community or the up building or the improvement of public institutions.
