Born May 16, 1842, in Steuben County, New York, died January 1, 1912 in Woodbury County, Iowa. Mr. Rice married Harriet E. Gordon on July 28, 1874 in Woodbury County, Iowa. Mr. Rice graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1865. He was a prominent figure in the early history of Smithland acting as a banker, drug store owner, founder of a weekly newspaper, and as a practicing physician. He was elected to represent Woodbury county in the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Iowa General Assemblies, 1886-1888.
