Born in Bridgewater, New York, January 7, 1823. He received his education from the Hamilton Academy and the medical department of the New York State University from, which institution he graduated in 1848. Immediately the young doctor came west and located in Rock County, Wisconsin, where he practiced nineteen years, coming to Mitchell County, in the fall of 1866. For many years previous to his removal to Osage, he was an honored practitioner and businessman of Mitchell. While a resident of Wisconsin he served three terms in the state legislature, and while a resident of Mitchell County one term in the Fourteen General Assembly, 1872, in the Iowa lower house. In 1876, he was elected State Senator and in this capacity the fine qualities of his mind and prudence in legislative functions was clearly demonstrated, and the confidence of his constituency in this ability brought to them the best of results. In 1848, he married Lucy A. Brewer.
