Joseph A Crawford was born about 1840 in Pennsylvania. His parents were Mary and Benjamin Crawford. His father was the head of the Steamboat Inspection Bureau in Washington, D.C. for 22 years. Joseph served in the Union Army from Pennsylvania, he enlisted as a Lieutenant in 1862 and was discharged as a Captain in 1865. He located to Davenport, Iowa from 1870 to 1881. In Davenport he ran a law office with his brother John N. Crawford. He served as a representative from Scott County in the 16th General Assembly in 1876. In 1872 he married Jennie M. Allen in Scott County, Iowa. They had one daughter, Marie, in 1881. He died on July 24, 1885, in Arkansas at the age of 45, and was buried in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
