Born April 18, 1823 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He was one of the early settlers of Benton county, having come here about the year 1855, and was for some time associated with Judge Shane in the practice of law. He was elected judge in 1862 and served until 1864. Judge McCartney also represented Benton county in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Iowa General Assemblies, 1876-78. He was a man of push and energy and was prominent in working for the public good. He, with his family, went from here to National City, CA in 1888. He was married to Miss Cynthia A. Dodds.
