Born in Portland, O., in 1852. The family came to Iowa in 1868, and settled on a farm in Pleasant Grove township in Marion county. Mr. Elliott obtained a public school education which was continued through the various grades, and also spent three years in Poland college, at Portland, O. He was a youth of sixteen years when his parents came to Iowa. Later he engaged in teaching school here for several winter seasons. When he was but 23 years old he was elected a member of the Iowa state legislature. While continuing in the profession of teaching he devoted the hours which are usually termed leisure to the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1876, after which he engaged in practice for a few years. During the same period he conducted a loan business, and it was but a logical step from that line of business to banking. In 1884 he was offered and accepted the position of cashier in the Knoxville National bank. He was an active farmer and stock raiser, and his place was widely known for the fine trotting horses which were raised. He was also identified in the early days with the development of the coal fields in the county, and was recognized as a most forceful and resourceful business man. In 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Nora E. Miller, daughter of the late Admiral B. and Eliza Miller. Mr. Elliott was a valued member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In politics he was always a stalwart democrat and was recognized as one of the leaders of the party in this section of the state in the early days. For many years he served as a member of the state central committee, and for two terms he represented Marion county in the Iowa legislature.
