Born on September 10, 1843, in Morgan County, Illinois. His parents removed to Pella, Iowa, one year later. While a boy he enlisted in the Twenty-third volunteer infantry, serving three years. He went to school at Pella and there in 1869 married Miss Rebecca Ryan. He studied law in Des Moines when the university law school was there. He practiced law for a time at Prairie City, and was elected a member of the Iowa legislature. In 1879, Mr. Deweese removed to Lincoln. He was an adviser of Mr. Touzilin in legal matters, and he soon became associated with T. M. Marquet, who was general counsel for the Burlington west of the river. That partnership lasted until the death of T. M. Marquet. The position of solicitor of the lines west of the river was then given to Mr. Deweese.
