Born in Deeke, Kingdom of Hanover, Germany, July 4th, 1818. He came to America with his parents when but a child, who located at New Bremen, Ohio. He was left an orphan at the age of 15 years, and grew to manhood in the home of Hon. James Riley, of St. Mary's, Ohio. In 1840, he was married to Dorothea Mohrman and to this union eleven children were born. In 1846 he came to Garnavillo, Clayton county, Iowa, where he made his home until 1893. In I874 he was elected to the lower house of the Iowa General Assembly, a position which he well and honorably filled. In religion he was a German Lutheran. In politics he was a republican and a staunch believer and defender of the policies of that great political alliance.
