Darius B. Hanan
Chickasaw County
Born about 1831 in New York. By 1850 the Hanans had moved to Rutland, Dane County, Wisconsin. On March 9, 1857, he married Cornelia A. Hale and by 1860 Darius and Cornelia were living in Chickasaw County, Iowa. They had two daughters. He was an attorney and postmaster. Mr. Hanan, who was second in the race for representative in 1869, was again a candidate in Chickasaw County against George W. Butterfield, in 1871, and was elected by a majority of 302. He was re-elected in 1873, by a plurality of 253; F. D. Bosworth and William Tucker were the other candidates in this race. Mr. Hanan was taken sick soon after his election, and was confined to his room during the entire session of the legislature, being able to leave his room for the first time on the day of its adjournment. It was a facetious remark that this term of Hanan’s political life presented the cleanest record of any man’s that was ever elected to the position. Notwithstanding he was unable to appear and qualify, the legislature gave him his salary, but no traveling fees. He died August 31, 1890, in New Hampton.
