Martin Read was born in New York, New York, in 1836. Admitted to the bar at Corydon in 1864. He served in Company H of the Iowa Cavalry as sergeant in February 1864. He was taken prisoner in Newnan, Georgia, in July 1864 and imprisoned at Andersonville Prison; mustered out in June 1865 and applied for an invalid pension in December 1865. In 1871 he purchased the Corydon Monitor paper and published it about one year. He held the offices of county judge, State senator, and clerk of the District Court while in this county and resided there until 1881, when he went to Princeton, Mercer County, Missouri. Mr. Read also held the office of county attorney in Missouri. He died in Princeton, Missouri, in 1914.
