Born in Deerfield, Mass., July 25, 1807. Like the majority of boys born in New England at that early day, about his only inheritance was a sound mind and a vigorous constitution, with the privileges of a limited education, supplemented by the rigid moral and religious training common among the descendents of the Puritans. In his 25th year, he married Miss Lauretta Smith. He soon after removed to New York state and from there to Ohio and finally to Iowa where he located on a farm in 1836. In 1871 he was chosen Representative by the people of Henry County to represent them in the general assembly of the state, on an independent ticket.
