Born in Pennsylvania on July 17, 1824. He married Mary Ann Kramer at Linglestown Pennsylvania, in 1856. They lived for a period of time in Carroll County Illinois. Peter Bonewitz went to Iowa about 1865. He was proprietor of the Heyen store in Langworthy, Iowa. Bonewitz erected the Heyen store to provide quarters that were larger than his first store on the other side of the road. This first store also is thought to have been the first in the village. He was in the postmastership from 1861 to 1869. He died September 30, 1900, and is buried in Canon City, Colorado.
