Henry W. Peck
Decatur County
Born at Chardon, Ohio, May 23, 1831, and died at Decatur, Iowa, June 6, 1895. The deceased, after having mastered the branches of study in the schools of Chardon, sought an appointment as a cadet in the United States Military Academy at West Point on the Hudson. He had the honor to graduate from that famous institution in the class of 1853. Col. Peck was broke out he responded to the call and in 1801 helped to raise a regiment in blue and went to the front as Lieut. Colonel of the Second Wisconsin Volunteers. He was promoted to assistant ordinance officer and commanded at Fort Jackson after its capture. At the close of the war he received a creditable and honest. honorable discharge and returning home engaged in his occupation, that of civil engineer, in which he was eminently successful. On November 4, 1856, he was united in marriage to Sarah B. Collins at Chester, Ohio. He received his diploma as a master mason from Cladron Lodge, No. 73 November 22 1856, and retained his membership until he united with Decatur Lodge, No. 109, A. F. & A. M., November 8, 1883. His continuous residence in Decatur since July, 1903, has brought about him a wide circle of warm friends and in token of the respect and confidence reposed in him he was called to represent the county in the state legislature in the Twelfth General Assembly, 1867-68. He also held other official positions. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
