Charles was born on April 23, 1834, in Pennsylvania. Sometime after 1850, he relocated from Blair County, Pennsylvania, and, in 1860, married Sarah Jane Conrow in Scott County. By 1870, the couple was living in Le Claire, where Charles worked in the lumber business. Around 1875, the family moved to Red Oak, where he was a grain dealer. Charles and Sarah had 9 children. He passed away on August 4, 1910, in Red Oak.
