Joseph Grimes
Delaware County
Born in Candor, Tioga County, New York, July 21, 1815. In 1848 he joined the tide of emigration towards the west and settled in Delaware County, entering a tract of 80 acres in Colony Township under the homestead laws. He remained here a year; when he removed into Clayton County, where he established a sawmill. He again returned to a farm in Colony Township, where he resided until 1861, when he went to Michigan to look after property interests and to make his future home, but the warm ties and associations formed in his early home soon drew him back to this county again, and he resided on a farm until 1879, when he removed to Colesburg. During his long and useful career in this county he has served the people in various official capacities, and always with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He held the office of justice of the peace of Colony Township for 21 years. In 1858, he was elected to the state legislature, and in 1868 was elected to the state senate. He also served the county for four years as a member of the board of supervisors. He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
