Born on August 25, 1823, in Pennsylvania, he married Mary Ijams in 1846 in Muskingum County, Ohio. The couple initially lived in Ohio, but by 1860 they had moved to Warren County, Iowa, where they farmed for several years. By 1880, the family relocated to Warrensburg, Missouri, where he died in 1885.
