Benjamin Robert Palmer

Clinton County

Born June 11, 1827, at Malborn, New York. He was a farmer and a builder. A member of the Low Moor Farmers Club. Mr. Palmer was married to Phebe Ann Jones. He migrated from New York state with his wife and their youngest children. Mr. Palmer and his wife were links in the Underground Railroad, delivering escaped slaves to Clinton, Iowa, where they rowed across the Mississippi River. Mr. Palmer was elected to represent Clinton county in the Eleventh General Assembly, 1866. He read to the general assembly the first petition for woman's suffrage. He was a Quaker.
