Son of Samuel and Magdalene Landes he was born in August County, Virginia, October 26, 1831. He came when a child with his parents to Indiana, and later to Iowa coming first to Clarke County, near Osceola. During the Civil War he enlisted with the 18th Iowa Infantry at Hopeville, Iowa, July 28, 1962, and served as a First Lieutenant of Co. B., December 21, 1863, and then promoted to Captain of Company A. When the war ended he returned to Hopeville where he engaged in the mercantile business. Immediately upon return from the army he was married to Emma Johnson who lived only a few years. Mr. Landes was a member of the Methodist Church. He was elected to the State Legislature representing Clarke County in the Eleventh Iowa General Assembly, 1866.
