Born in Concord, New Hampshire, May 23d, 1832, and came to Iowa in the spring of 1854 and engaged in teaching school. On October 24th, 1854, he married Martha A. Hilleary, daughter of Alexander Hilleary. He was one of the earliest to enlist in the First Iowa cavalry at the outbreak of the war, and served with bravery and distinction throughout that weary struggle. Upon his return home in 1865, he was nominated by the Republicans and elected to represent Des Moines County in the state legislature, Eleventh General Assembly.
