Born in Troy, New York, January 5, 1817. In early life he was a sailor, but tiring of the seaman's life he-removed to the west, locating at Iowa City. His ability and good qualities brought him into prominence and he was chosen to many positions of trust and responsibility among others as sheriff of the county in 1851 and member of the legislature, 1856. He married Millicent Hart November 8, 1849.
