Born in Maryland, April 29, 1825. He worked in a store until about seventeen years old. Before he was twenty he attended Jefferson College, Washington County, Pa., two years, then studied law under John Thompson Mason, of Maryland; was admitted to the bar in 1845. He came west and settled in Lee County, Iowa. He did merchandising, farming, operated woolen mills, flouring and saw mills. In 1854, he pulled up and came to Nebraska to study the nature of the Kansas-Nebraska bill of that epoch. The same year he went to Utah, under appointment from the government, and remained until 1856. He came back to Dakota County, Iowa, and lived there until 1859, when he returned to Lee County, Iowa where he stayed until 1875, then settled in Dakota City. He was a member of the Iowa Senate in the Eleventh and Twelfth General Assemblies, 1866 and 1868. He was defeated for Congress, in Nebraska, in 1876, by Frank Welch. Mr. Hollman has a fine farm, adjoining Dakota City. He was a born Democrat.
