Henry White
Clayton County
Born in South Hero, Vermont, November 6, 1818. Mr. White was raised upon a farm and educated in the Common Schools of his native town, afterwards attending an academy at St. Albans, Vt. At the age of 25 he married Rhoda Mott. In 1850 his wife died and in 1852 he married Clara P. Drake. For thirty-eight years he was engaged in milling, farming and dealing in general merchandise in Volga City. He was one of the leaders of the Republican party for many years and represented this county in the legislature during the stormy period of 1863-4. In the early eighties he became an advocate of state and national prohibition and the retrogression of this movement caused him profound grief. For thirty years his life was that of an earnest Christian.
