James Bruce
Des Moines County
Born in Frederick County, Penn., March 19, 1814. His father's name was James Bruce and his mother's maiden name was Anna Job. He came with his parents to Ohio in 1811. He came to this state in 1837 and settled north of Kossuth. He was a farmer, currier and tanner. In 1839 he was married to Miss Mary Rankin, formerly of Pennsylvania. He represented this county in the Legislature in 1864. He has filled several important offices in the county. His sterling integrity and his great good sense always placed him at the front among the men in their business transactions, and his prompt service when duty called him always placed him in positions where work was to be done. He was for many years an active member of the M. E. Church.
