Leonard Wells Hart
Buchanan County
Born in Batavia, New York, September 7, 1822. He was educated at Caryvill and Lyma College, New York, and went south to Holly Springs, Mississippi in the forties, where he lived and taught school for a number of years. In 1855 he removed to Independence, where he engaged in the practice of law, and served as a member of the state senate during the war of the Rebellion, 1884-86. He was one of the signers of the ratification of the emancipation proclamation issued by Gov. Stone of this state. He married Eleanor Curtis on the 4th day July, 1855, at Independence, and they lived there for about 22 years. In 1877 the couple moved to Nebraska, where they resided at Seward, and then to Archer county, Texas. He was a prominent member of the Methodist church for forty years.
