James McManus
Scott County
James McManus was born November 10, 1804, in Newark, Delaware, and married March 10, 1831, on Long Island, to Sarah Whittlesey, a native of Mystic, Connecticut, her grandfather having been one of the original proprietors of the town. They were the parents of three sons and four daughters. Mr. McManus was a stonecutter and stone mason; he built the principal stone-works on Fort Hamilton, Long Island. He was a heavy railroad contractor in the East. He came to the West in 1843, purchased the old McGregor farm and returned to Delaware for his family, which he brought here the following year. In connection with farming he engaged in merchandising and together with his partner, Mr. Shepherd, built a large block of stores. He retired from active business in 1854. He was a member of the first state legislature as a Whig, and obtained the charter for Iowa College, of which he was one of the founders, one of its first trustees, and its first treasurer, and was a trustee at the time of his death in 1879. James McManus died February 15, 1879, at his residence at the west end of Third Street, Davenport, Iowa.
