Joshua Holland
Des Moines County
Joshua Holland was born about 1800 in Jackson County, Georgia. He came to Des Moines County, Iowa, from Indiana where he married Rebeckah Williams in Fayette County, November 1822. They moved to Iowa sometime between 1836 and 1838. They had six children. Rebeckah died in 1842. He married Sarah Stafford in Des Moines County in 1843. They had one child, Oscar J. Holland, born about 1849. Holland ran on the Independent ticket twice and was a Whig serving in the 8th Legislative Assembly and the 1st General Assembly. In March 1849 he resigned his appointment at the Augusta Post Office in Des Moines County and in April he left on a wagon train with about 75 others from the Burlington area for California gold. They arrived at their destination in late August. He died in Sacramento, California, October 8, 1849.
