Hawkins Taylor
Lee County
Born November 15, 1811, in Barren County, Kentucky. While living in Illinois, he married Melinda Walker in 1834. In May 1836, Mr. Taylor traveled to the Iowa Territory and began construction on a house in West Point, eventually settling there with his family by August 1839. In 1838, he actively campaigned for a position in the Territorial Legislature and was elected to the House of Representatives of the First Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory, representing Lee County. He was later elected Sherriff of Lee County in 1840. He eventually moved to Washington, D.C., in 1868, and worked as a lobbyist. Mr. Taylor died in Washington, D.C., on November 6, 1893.
