Born in 1804 in Kingstree, South Carolina, he made his way west to Iowa in 1837, where he served the people of Muscatine County in the First Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory. In 1839, he was appointed brigadier general in the Iowa territorial militia and also served as the department surveyor for Iowa Territory. That same year, he surveyed the site for the capital of the territory. On September 28, 1839, he married Harriet Wheeler Robbins in Adams County, Illinois. In 1841, he moved to Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, where he later passed away on May 18, 1844.
