Lawson B. Hughes
Henry County
Hughes was born in Virginia in 1809. He moved to Fountain County, Indiana, in 1823 and married Cassandra Cone in 1828. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1883 to 1834 and was a Fountain County, Indiana, sheriff from 1834 to 1836. He located to Henry County, Iowa, sometime before 1838. In 1839, Hughes and Jesse D. Payne of Henry County, and William Patterson of Lee County, were significant in settling the dispute between the southern Iowa and Missouri border, also known as the Honey War. The committee negotiated that both Iowa Governor Lucas and Missouri Governor Boggs call off their militia and allow the federal government to decide the boundary. Hughes moved to California in 1849 but returned to Iowa and was in Madison County in 1860. He moved back to Lawrence County, Indiana, in 1864 and died there on March 26, 1889.
