Born March 13, 1810 in Maryland. He traveled to Wisconsin Territory and became one of the founders of the town of Keosauqua in 1837. A year later, Iowa Territory was created. He went on to represent Van Buren County in the House of Representatives of the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Legislative Assemblies of the Iowa Territory, 1838-1841. He died November 19, 1845 in Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa.
