Born March 25, 1792, near Baltimore, Maryland. As a child, he moved to Kentucky with his parents, where he volunteered following the outbreak of the War of 1812. He later moved to Illinois, where he raised and lead as Captain a volunteer company during the Black Hawk War. In 1836, he moved his family to Iowa Territory. He represented Des Moines County in the House of Representatives of the Second Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory. In 1845, he moved his family to Oregon, where he volunteered with several of his sons following the outbreak of the Cayuse War. He lived briefly in California in 1869, but returned to California in 1871. He was married twice, first in 1812 and again sometime after 1851; neither of his wives is named in any historical sources.
