Born January 14, 1814, in Champaign county, Ohio, the son of John and Lydia Rathbun. He joined the M. E. Church December 26, 1828 and was married to Eleanor Fox in 1836. He was licensed to preach in the same year. His father was a physician and when a boy he commenced the study of medicine. He moved to Iowa in 1839, and located in Cedar county, where he resided until 1864. During most of his residence there he was engaged in the practice of medicine, but was always active in church work. He was ordained deacon in 1841. He was elected representative from Cedar county October 26, 1846, to the first state legislature of Iowa. In 1864, he moved to Marion and remained a resident of this city until his death.
