Born in Otsego County, New York in 1810. He came to the Northwest as a young man, living in Iowa and Minnesota. Prior to coming to Minnesota, Mr. Olmstead was involved with Iowa politics. He was named a delegate to the 1844 State Constitutional Convention. He represented Clayton County in the First General Assembly, 1946. Mr. Olmstead was also involved in lumbering. Lumbering operations were wide spread during the 1850s especially after the Indians were forced to live on reservations, and the pine forest of northern Minnesota was opened up to settlement.
