Came to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, about 1842 or 1843. Ho was a bright young lawyer and took an active interest in politics. He was one of the representatives from Henry county in the first General Assembly, in 1846, and was elected to the Senate from that county in 1850. He continued the practice of law until about 1856, when he went to Quincy, Illinois, and became the editor of The Quincy Whig, a well-known newspaper, which he conducted until near the close of the civil war. He was shot and quite severely wounded by some rebel sympathizer during the war, for something he had published in his paper. After the war he went to Kansas, and was for a number of years one of the district judges in that state.
