The founder of the town of Drakeville. Born in Adams county, N. C., October 22, 1802. He married Harriet Jane O’Neil in Franklin County, South Carolina, June 12, 1827. He moved in the spring of 1828, to Richland County, Tennessee, and in the fall of 1830 to Rushville, Ill. In 1837 he again removed, this time to Ft. Madison, Iowa, where he resided until 1846, when he came to Davis county and founded the goodly town of Drakeville, which bears his name. Drakeville was his home for over thirty years, but in March, 1877, he removed to Centerville. While at Rushville, he was engaged in the mercantile business. At Fort Madison he was several times elected Probate Judge and was frequently call to other responsible positions. He represented Davis County in the Legislature of 1853-4. His religious life began in February, 1833, when he became a member of the Church of Christ at Rushville. He was soon chosen Deacon, and not long after, Elder. He was a man of untarnished Christian and business character. Of generous spirit, social disposition, and a bountiful provider, his home was ever noted for its hospitalities. Few men in Southern Iowa were more widely known or more highly esteemed than he.
